This site is all about decorating cakes but you need a cake before you can decorate it.  So I’m going to show you how to easily make a cake using a mix.  I’ll be using a Pillsbury mix and the instructions given will be specific to this mix.  You should follow the directions on your box.

You will need:

  • Cake mix
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/3 cup of oil
  • 3 eggs

At this point go ahead and preheat your oven to 350°.  You should also prepare your cake pan by lightly coating the bottom of the pan with shortening first and then a little flour.  This will keep the cake from sticking to your pan.

Now you can combine your ingredients and mix them together with your awesome KitchenAid mixer.  Use a medium speed for about 2 minutes.  If you don’t have a KitchenAid mixer you really need one.  Get one here.   Sign up for cj.com to earn commission on these mixers  https://signup.cj.com/member/brandedPublisherSignUp.do?air_refmerchantid=1845109

When the cake mix is a good consistency pour it into a 9 inch cake pan and stick it in the oven for about 30 minutes at 350.  When the timer goes off use a toothpick to check if its done.  Just stick the toothpick in the middle of the cake.  If it comes out clean your cake is done.  Sit the cakes on a cooling rack for 10 to 15 minutes.

When the cakes are cooled you will need to flip them over to get them out of the pans.  If you let them cool too much it will be very hard to get them out of the pans.  To fix this problem just pop them back in the oven at 250 for a couple minutes.  Watch the video below of me taking the cake out of the pan.

Your cake is now ready for decorating.  The next step is adding a crumbcoat.  Follow along with the next class here.
